How do I register for formal recruitment?
To sign up for formal recruitment as an incoming freshman, it is through your WSU housing application. If you are a transfer or a potential new member that is not required to live in the residence halls, you can find the link once registration has begun. Please see the above link OR click on the tab on the LEFT that says "Join a Sorority!" to see the recruitment registration link.
*Over the years, we have had difficulty with women who think they have signed up for formal recruitment when, in fact, they have not. IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID THE REGISTRATION FEE, AND IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED A CONFIRMATION EMAIL, YOU ARE NOT SIGNED UP FOR RECRUITMENT. Once registration closes we cannot open it up again. If you are not sure if you are signed up for recruitment, contact the Vice President of Recruitment at panrecruitment@wsu.edu.
What is Recruitment?
Formal Recruitment is a week long event which allows a chance to meet all NPC chapters recognized on campus. Informal recruitment occurs for chapters who have not yet met quota and are allowed to have more members. Informal recruitment, or Continuous Open Bidding, or Continuous Open Recruitment can happen any time during the school year.
When is formal recruitment?
Recruitment for August 2010 will begin the week before school starts: Monday, August 16, 2010. Informal Recruitment is an on-going event throughout the school year for sororities who have room for more members. For more information on informal, click on informal on your left.
What is a chapter?
A chapter is an individual branch of a larger organization. For example, Beta Beta Beta International Sorority would be the larger organization, and their specific chapter at a university would start with Alpha, the second would be Beta, third Gamma, etc.
What is a legacy?
In most chapters, a true legacy is a sister, mother, or grandmother. Other chapters may also include an aunt, cousin, or step mother.
If I'm a legacy, am I guaranteed a spot in that chapter?
A common misconception is that because you are a legacy for one chapter means that they will automatically offer you a bid. The Beta Beta Beta chapter from when your grandmother was an undergraduate may or may not be the same chapter when you go through recruitment. Just because you are a legacy does not mean that you are guaranteed a spot in that chapter. Each chapter has their own policies regarding legacies, including their process and what kind of familial ties are considered legacies.
What is “mutual selection”?
Our recruitment process is one of mutual selection. As a potential new member, or PNM, you will go to each chapter on the first two days and be able to get a feel for the women in each one. After the first round, you will then narrow it down to ten chapters. The sororities will do the same thing, and will narrow their selection, also. When your lists match, you will return to those chapters on the following day. This is how the process works the whole week.
What do sororities look for in members?
Well rounded, balanced women. They look for individuals who are academically, philanthropically, financially and socially responsible. They look for women who possess different qualities, interests, and abilities, in order to build a strong, diverse chapter that benefits the entire chapter.
What is a Rho Gamma?
A Rho Gamma (Recruitment Guide) is your personal, live-in counselor, guide, mentor, and friend during the formal recruitment process. They will be able to assist you with any questions that you may have, and as a disaffiliated junior or senior of the Greek community, you will receive unbiased answers to difficult questions. Trust your Rho Gamma, they've gone through months of training to be there, for you!
How do I decide which sorority to join?
To find the sorority that is the best fit for you, make sure that you talk to about you, your interests, and things that matter to you. When you are going through recruitment, make sure to ask questions that truly reflect what is best for you – not your roommate or best friend. The women who are the happiest after recruitment are the ones who listened to their heart and not their neighbor.
How much does it cost?
Most sororities have new member dues, live-in dues, and live-out dues. The total cost of living in a sorority are very comprable to living in the Residence Halls. The exact amount is different for each chapter and will be determined each year and available to new members.
What are the responsibilities of a new member?
Memberships are very important, lifelong commitments and should not be taken lightly. A pledge or bid, which is received after recruitment, is binding for one year. After a year has passed, if the woman is not initiated yet, she has the opportunity to go through recruitment again and receive a new pledge from that sorority or another. Once a woman is initiated, however, she will never be allowed to join another sorority. Responsibilities of a new member include maintaining that chapter’s required GPA as well as that of the school, paying dues promptly, obeying all aspects of the law, and following house and university rules.
Do my grades matter?
Yes, grades are an influential factor in the decision in the process. Chapters work hard to maintain a strong chapter grade point average in order to stay off tier status and maintain university recognition. Scholarship is also one of the main pillars in value based organizations like National Panhellenic Council sororities.
I'm a transfer/sophomore, should I still apply for formal recruitment?
Yes! As mentioned before, each chapter has their own criteria when recruiting potential new members. Your age may be a factor at one or two houses, but you will still find one for you!
What is a 'recruitment party'?
A 'recruitment party' is the term used for the time that you spend at each sorority during Formal Recruitment. The women will greet you with a song or chant of some sort and will invite you into their home. It can be thought of as a sort of informal interview. You will get a chance to meet with several different women and talk with them to get a feel for their chapter members. Also, they will show you around their house as the week goes on and you will spend time in different rooms, such as their living room, kitchen etc. Each chapter will have different plans but all of them will be excited to welcome you in and meet you! You will be greeted with a fun drink (ranging from water to frappuccinos maybe!) every day to help you through the hot week and all the talking you will do!
